Their competition-winning design has inserted 201 square metres of new spaces for exhibitions, the permanent collection, education, events, and an archive. The new interior will be opened to the public on 18th November, when it will be re-launched as ‘The Garden Museum’. The project has been built to a tight budget and a tight timetable: ‘Thanks to an innovative design based upon Swiss prefabrication technology we have been able to insert a modern Museum inside an old church and we’ve only had to shut for four months’. Christopher Woodward, Garden Museum Director.     > Exhibitions   Beth Chatto: A Retrospective 18th November 2008-19th April 2009 Tuesday to Sunday each week (closed Christmas period) 10.30 am to 5.00 pm Museum admission charges apply: £6 s, £3 Art Fund members, free under 16's, full time students and carers of dissabled people. Our new gallery opens with the first-ever retrospective of Beth Chatto, one of the most influential living gardeners in Britain who is perhaps best known for her pioneering, ecological approach to gardening, which was developed in the 1960s, yet is so relevant to gardeners today. The story of how the Beth Chatto Gardens grew out of a patch of wasteland at the back of her husband’s Es fruit farm and how this became one of the best-loved gardens in Britain is told through private archives, paintings and photographs. The exhibition will examine the subtlety of her approach to design and explore important influences that include her husband Andrew’s life-long study of the natural association of plants, the work of her friend the artist Sir Cedric Morris, her early career as an instructor for the Flower Club Movement and her interest in music and architecture. Later publications and correspondence will show how her particular kind of gardening has been debated, enjoyed and appreciated by professional and amateur gardeners alike.       > News       The Garden Museum Reopening 18th November After four months of hard work and preparations the Garden Museum will open its doors on the 18 November with a new identity, a new interior and the first gallery in Britain dedicated to gardens and gardening. An important feature of the knot garden is that the design incorporates the letter ‘T’ for Tradescant, planted with cotton lavender, Santolina chamaecyparissus. The Tradescants were important British gardeners and plant hunters, and were amongst the first men to be commissioned by wealthy garden owners to bring back ornamental plants to this country from overseas. John Tradescant the Elder (c.1570-1638) was the gardener at Hatfield House from 1610 when the original gardens were being laid out for Robert Cecil, the first Earl of Salisbury. Tradescant travelled to Europe and Russia on his plant hunting expeditions, and his son, also John (1608-1662) ventured as far as North America, and introduced many important plants to Britain, such as the tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera (growing on the front lawn) and Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia (growing on the boundary wall near the garden entrance).     Content Bottom Lambeth Palace Road, London SE1 7LB Tel: 020 7401 8865 Fax: 020 7401 8869 Email: info@gardenmuseum.org.uk
